1) Who can receive Acupuncture or Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is safe for children, seniors & pretty much anyone in between. Each treatment is tailored towards the individual and the condition being treated.
2) What should I wear during Acupuncture or Shiatsu treatment?
For shiatsu, loose or stretchy comfortable clothing is best. Acupuncture may require you to remove your clothing to access certain areas of the body. The therapist will drape you with sheets to maintain your privacy & comfort at all times.
3) How should I prepare for an Acupuncture or Shiatsu treatment?
Please avoid eating a heavy meal directly before treatment; however a light snack/juice is recommended. Although it’s important to take any prescribed medications as you normally would, please refrain from any pain medication pre-treatment.
Post-treatment vigorous activities should be avoided. It’s also beneficial to increase your water intake for the remainder of the day. After a shiatsu session it’s beneficial to take a warm bath with Epsom salts to soothe your soul & muscles.
4) How will I feel after the Acupuncture or Shiatsu session?
Generally people feel great post-treatment, but this of course varies from person to person. Most people report feelings of deep relaxation, revitalization and feeling ‘grounded’. Muscle tension & pain are decreased; overall flexibility & energy are increased.
Rarely, people experience a short-lived worsening of symptoms post-treatment, which is typically followed by a significant improvement. This is a natural part of the healing process.
5) How often should I receive Acupuncture or Shiatsu treatments?
Treatment frequency is contingent of the condition & person being treated. For acute conditions, 3 – 6 treatments may suffice. Chronic conditions likely require more treatments. A treatment plan will be discussed during your first treatment.
Having regular acupuncture and/or shiatsu treatments (biweekly or monthly etc.) is a great way to keep stress at bay & proactively maintain one’s health.
6) Can I receive Acupuncture or Shiatsu if I am pregnant?
Acupuncture & Shiatsu are can be safe & appropriate during pregnancy. Certain precautions are taken regarding which points/areas are treated (i.e. abdomen is avoided) & which trimester the expectant mother is in. Common complaints during pregnancy such as fatigue, nausea and sciatica can be effectively treated with acupuncture &/or shiatsu. Consulting with your MD prior to acupuncture while pregnant is recommended.
7) Is Acupuncture painful?
When performed properly acupuncture should not hurt, as the needles are very thin. There may be a split-second of discomfort on insertion but many people do not feel any discomfort. While the needles are being retained, feelings of heaviness or other mild sensations may be experienced, the therapist can always remove any needles that are causing you any discomfort. Patients should be comfortable throughout the treatment.
8) What is Clean Needle Technique (CNT)?
CNT ensures that proper guidelines in hand sanitation, as well as insertion, removal & disposal of needles, are followed. All needles are single-use & pre-sterilized minimizing the risk of infection to both patient and therapist.
